The Carolina Newswire reports that October 1st will be National Hola Day. This day was set aside to recognize the contributions of Hispanics in the United States, and to celebrate those people committed to learning Spanish and becoming bilingual. The paper goes on to say, “celebrating Hispanic Heritage in the US goes back to 1968, when Congress authorized President Lyndon Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week. This observance expanded in 1988 to a full month beginning annually on Sept. 15.”
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that there is a new school opening in Oakland called Escuela BilingÞe Internacional. It is based on the bilingual French school at Berkley called Ecole Bilingue. Lessons in the school are done in English and Spanish, and teachers routinely remind students to speak only in Spanish during certain classes. School administrators hope that more schools like this are formed as many parents want their children to become bilingual. There is currently a waiting list for this innovative school.
