The Daytona Beach News Journal states that Spanish skills continue to give workers an edge in the marketplace. The article states that the need is greatest in healthcare, educational, and emergency services.
“Ana Eire, a Spanish language professor at Stetson University, said a person’s foreign language skills generally should go beyond basic oral communication to be considered fully bilingual.”“You must be sure your skills are not exclusively oral but they include reading and writing at a higher level of competency,” the native of Spain said.
“For example, people working in the medical and legal field typically will need higher foreign language fluency and a good grasp of job-related technical terms,” she said.
Elias Lorenzo, a Spanish teacher at Daytona Beach Community College, said there’s an increase in interest in the law enforcement and business community to learn Spanish, focusing on their respective fields.
When working with students, Lorenzo of DBCC reiterates that mastering a foreign language will give them a competitive advantage.
“I sum it up to one word — money,” he said. “If your clients speak Spanish, you learn Spanish. If they speak Chinese, you learn Chinese. It’s the language that’s spoken by your customers.”
