Store Owner Demands Proof of Citizenship from Customers

March 13th, 2008 · No Comments

According to the Providence, Rhode Island Journal, David Richardson, owner of a heating equipment supply company demanded to see a customer’s social security card. Said Richardson, “I have no problem as a citizen of the United States of America to try and pursue people who are breaking laws. I was just trying to make [them] understand that people who come into this country who are illegal shouldn’t be here. I am very passionate about that.” He said he did not call ICE or make a citizen’s arrest “because I didn’t have enough proof.”

The customers were both U. S. citizens from the Dominican Republic. One customer, Mr. Genao said that Mr. Richardson demanded to see his Social Security card while he was ringing up his $18 purchase. While Mr. Genao was waiting, he turned to his friend and started speaking Spanish. That’s when Mr. Richardson demanded the card.

The article also states: “Mark Potok, head of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project, which tracks hate crimes in the United States, said the incident reflects the tide of anti-immigrant sentiment in this country — not solely restricted to illegal immigrants.”

The Journal also revealed that Mr. Richardson’s actions could have civil and criminal penalties attached.
